DESIGNER Ignazio GARDELLA (1905-1999) was one of the leading figures in 20th-century Italian rationalism and architecture. Born in Milan into a family of engineers, he graduated in both engineering and architecture, a quality that enabled him to combine technical rigor and aesthetic sensitivity. During the 1930s he joined the Modern Movement, but he was able to distinguish himself from the more rigid dogmas thanks to a personal approach, attentive to the urban context and the Italian building tradition. Among his most famous works are the Dispensario antitubercolare in Alessandria (1938), a paradigmatic example of rationalism, and the Casa alle Zattere in Venice (1953-58), in which modernity and historical memory dialogue. Founder of the BBPR studio and also active in furniture and lamp design, Gardella collaborated with companies such as Azucena, helping to define a sober, refined and timeless taste. His long career testifies to a constant search for balance between innovation and continuity, making him an internationally recognized master
