Pamono M. Moreau, Ondine Sculpture, Bronze> Classical

Superb brown patina bronze by Mathurin Moreau (1822-1912) also known as “Dragonfly” representing a young woman representing Ondine, the goddess of waters. Seated on a rock surrounded by reeds, a jug at her feet pouring water flowing perpetually, the nymph looks down, her head delicately bent, seeming to wonder and lost in her thoughts. Her gestures are graceful. She is naked under a light veil hanging from her small decorated wings and smiles on her soft face highlighted by her curly hair elegantly raised.
This refined bronze bears the artist’s signature “Math. Moreau” and rests on a rotating base. On a plaque on the front, we can read: “Ondine, by M. Moreau, Hors Concours, Membre du Jury”.

Mathurin Moreau was a renowned French sculptor, known for his representations of feminine grace and delicacy. He attended the Beaux Arts in Paris in 1841 and won the second prize of Rome in 1842. He won a medal at the 1855 World’s Fair in Paris, then at the 1878 World’s Fair.
