Pamono Hand-Painted Lattice Border Two-Handled Porcelain Tray from Meissen Porcelain, 1950s> Trays

The latticework form of this tray traces back to the pioneering work of Johann Joachim Kändler (1706–1775), Meissen’s master modeller and one of the most influential figures of 18th-century porcelain design. Kändler developed intricate pierced “basket-weave” rims and playful Rococo ornamentation that became hallmarks of Meissen luxury.

During the Rococo Revival and Belle Époque period (late 19th to early 20th century), these elegant designs were reinterpreted to suit the taste of Europe’s wealthy clientele, who valued richly gilded, hand-painted porcelain as both decorative art and a symbol of refinement. This 20th-century example continues that tradition, combining Kändler’s Rococo form with the realistic fruit painting for which Meissen is renowned.
