Pamono Giovanni Della Longa, Sculpture Depicting Jesus Christ and a Seated Woman, 19th Century, Terracotta> Classical

Wonderful sculpture in full terracotta therefore without mould, entirely modeled by hand, unique piece of great artistic value, as can be clearly seen from under the base where the terracotta is not hollow, but full and massive, very heavy, we are talking about a weight of more than 6 kg. The sculpture depicts Jesus Christ with a stone in his hand and a woman sitting immediately below him, in the parable of the adulteress, when he uttered the famous phrase “He who is without sin, cast the first stone”. The sculpture is signed with a signature engraved with a metal nib by the artist “Della Longa Roma 1846”. We are talking about a very ancient sculpture that is almost 200 years old. The evident patina is beautiful, perfectly in line with the dating of the sculpture.

from our web research we found a terracotta very similar to ours, also from the 19th century with three characters, also with a religious theme, offered on 1stDibs for over 4,000 euros, although much larger in size than ours. Then we found two sculptural groups also in terracotta, always with a religious theme, present in the catalog of the cultural heritage of Bologna created by Vincenzo Testoni and one in the catalog of the cultural heritage of Genoa, preserved in the A. Tubino Civic Museum, you can easily find them too, very similar to ours in terms of subject and artistic quality. All this to give an idea of ​​the value of sculptures of this type.

The object was created by the Roman artist Giovanni Della Longa, an engraver of great importance, active during the 19th century. He was born in Rome in 1823 and died in Rome in 1888, at the age of 65. Most likely this is one of the very few sculptures he created, an extremely rare object, very ancient and of great collectible value.
