Beautiful watercolor on oval cardboard depicting the portrait of a Scottish nobleman. Presented in a carved, gold-leafed oval frame. Signed “E. Krieger” on the lower right, the signature only visible when the frame is removed. The painting dates to the late 19th century, and the evident patina confirms our dating. The artistic quality is of the highest standard; note the beauty of the hair and beard, meticulously crafted, and the beauty of the man’s eyes and mouth. Notice how the light, which clearly comes from the right in the painting, is much brighter on the right than on the left, where there are several shadows—all elements of difficult execution, further demonstrating the painting’s excellent artistic quality. Painted by Eduard Krieger, a 19th-century German painter born around 1850.

Our research shows that a rather large oil on canvas sold for €5,635 (£3,800) at Christie’s London, lot 308, titled “Eduard KRIEGER (19th) Hansel and Gretel Hiding in the Forest (1851)” at the “IMPRESSIONIST & NINETEENTH CENTURY ART” auction on March 18, 1999, before the euro existed. In fact, the price in euros is the conversion of £3,800. At the time, one pound was worth approximately 3,000 lire, so 3,800 pounds was equivalent to approximately 11.5 million Italian lire, which today, taking inflation into account, would be equivalent to approximately 10,000-12,000 euros, plus auction fees. Finally, we found another painting, listed for €2,500-€3,500 at the Dorotheum in Vienna, Austria, at the “Ölgamälde und Aquarelle des 19. Jahrhunderts” auction on 11/12/2013, lot number 222 entitled “Eduard KRIEGER (19th), Rast bei der Ernte (1852)”.
