A delightful majolica ceramic box, entirely hand-crafted on a lathe, featuring a gilded bronze spherical lid knob. Crafted in the Art Deco style, dating back to around 1920-1930, the box is flat and rather large, trapezoidal in shape, with a flared base finished in pure gold. The interior is glazed with a beautiful, full-bodied, compact cobalt blue enamel, richly vitrified in a second firing. The exterior, however, is glazed with a matte, sugar-paper-colored base and then further hand-finished with white porcelain drippings, creating a striking orange peel effect. This leaves the exterior surface of the vase wrinkled and rough to the touch, a rather complex process that creates a striking visual effect. Signed under the base with the classic incised signature of the Batignani factory. A beautiful patina covers the entire object, especially under the base, perfectly consistent with our dating.
