In front of a large brown, partly overgrown boulder, which to the right offers a view of the cloudy blue sky in the light of the setting sun, the youthful David standing with supporting and playing leg, his upper body inclined to the right. He is wearing a short brown and white robe, sandals, a red headdress with a white feather and a long red cloak over his left shoulder, in which he has embedded the head of the slain Goliath, which he is clutching with his left arm on an ornate stone pedestal. In his right hand, above his left knee, he holds the large, shiny sword used for the deed. with his dark eyes, he looks directly out at the viewer. The incidence of light from the top left from an unseen source effectively illuminates his right arm, his left knee, the face and parts of Goliath’s head in particular. High-quality painting in a strong chiaroscuro manner in the style of Caravaggism.
