The work, certainly commissioned as an object of private devotion, depicts the Annunciation to the Virgin Mary, a Gospel episode here centered on the two figures portrayed in the foreground: the Archangel Gabriel with outstretched wings, a portrait of supernatural beauty, and the Virgin Mary. She is depicted here absorbed in reading a prayer book, her eyes humbly turned downward in a sign of devotion, while a small cherub offers her white lilies, a symbol of purity and chastity.

In the upper part of the composition, the austere image of God the Father, with a dove irradiated with light, emblem of the Holy Spirit, is surrounded by a flock of angels fluttering among clouds filled with intense flashes and plays of light, in true Baroque style.

An analysis of the stylistic and figurative features of our painting demonstrates its affiliation with the 17th-century Roman school, distinguished by its refined style and capable of blending the Baroque language, by definition sumptuous, with elements of classicist influence.

In particular, observing the iconographic features and design features, we find a striking resemblance to the style of Ciro Ferri (Rome 1633–1689), one of Pietro da Cortona’s best students, who embodied his mastery of drawing and color, while embracing a more classicizing and delicate style.

The structure of the painting clearly suggests that this is a valuable preparatory sketch, presumably a study for a fresco or a larger altarpiece; this suggests that the final work was intended to decorate the nave of a church or private chapel.
