Antique “Ring of the Heavens” or Bague au Firmament Ring blue enamel and diamonds.
Made around the 19th century and is most likely of Iberian (French or Spanish) origin). It has been set in silver clip setting with fourteen (14) rose cut diamonds around the edge and in the center one (1) rose cut diamond set in the shape of a flower. Below the pink diamonds is a royal blue enamel background. 19th century rings like this were known as “bagues au firmament”, or “rings of the heavens”. Such rings, popularized by Marie Antionette (Queen of France). History: The “Bague au Firmament” or “Ring of the Heavens”, was a popular style at the end of the 18th century and in the 19th century based on a ring originally designed for Marie Antoinette, given by her husband Louis XVI when announcing her pregnancy with the future Dauphin of France.
The blue enamel was intended to evoke the night sky, and the diamonds the stars.
Details: Approximate measurement 26 mm (1.02 inches) from north to south and 22 mm (0.87 inches) wide. We cannot estimate the weight of the diamond due to the type of setting, but they are natural rose cut, with a brilliant shine.
