This superb Impressionist oil canvas by French artist Charles Cermak, painted in the 1930s, offers a splendid representation of the landscape of the Côte d’Azur, near Saint-Tropez, where the artist lived. In the background, the sea is revealed, while the trees characteristic of the South of France enrich the composition.

In this work, Cermak deployed a remarkable artistic technique, using small, thick impastos to bring to life the colors of the grasses, trees and reflections in the water. Looser brushstrokes, particularly in the depiction of the moving sky, create the impression of wind seemingly blowing across the canvas. Originally from Czechoslovakia, Karel (Charles) Cermak chose to settle in Provence, in Saint-Tropez, where he developed a passion for depicting the landscapes of the Côte d’Azur and the picturesque fishing port of Saint-Tropez. Naturalized French in October 1930, Cermak is recognized as one of the most faithful interpreters of the landscapes of Provence and the Côte d’Azur. He exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants from 1929 to 1931, demonstrating his recognition within the art scene of the time.
