Charlemagne, probably born in 748, was King of the Franks from 768, then Emperor of the West from 800. The son of Pepin the Short, he expanded his empire through numerous conquests in Europe, notably against the Saxons and Lombards. He was crowned Emperor in Rome by Pope Leo III, marking the rebirth of the Roman Empire in the West. A promoter of education and the arts, he initiated the Carolingian Renaissance. He died in 814 in Aachen, leaving a major political and cultural legacy.
