Hot Pamono Alfred De Nieuwerkerke, Battle of the Duke of Clarence, Late 19th Century, Bronze

Large bronze depicting the Death of the Duke of Clarence during a Tournament: beautiful brown patina, the rich detailing of precision and finesse makes this sculpture lively and dynamic.

The carved wooden Gothic-style base is decorated with coats of arms and cartouches recounting this historical episode of the Hundred Years’ War; the perimeter of the base bears the title “Death of Monseigneur the Duke of Clarence, Brother of the English King Henry V, Killed in the Battle of Vieil Beauge by Grant de Fontaine, Knight in the Army of Monseigneur the Dauphin – Chronicles of Albion”

The Duke of Clarence, son of Henry V of England, recognizable here by the crown he wears on his helmet, confronts the knight Garin de Fontaine, representing the House of Anjou.
His rearing horse and broken lance indicate that he will soon lose this tournament.

This model was created in 1838 by Alfred Emile de Nieuwerkerke (1811-1892): a student of James Pradier, it is one of his most famous works.
Several models can be found, with varying shades, such as at the Musée du Château de Blois or the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.

The sculpture does not bear the artist’s signature, but the foundry stamp of Oskar Gladenbeck GMBH (foundry in Berlin).

Good overall condition, slight patina wear (on the base), some elements of the horses’ armor are missing (reins, etc.).
