Foundry’s mark: “J.B. Deposee, Bronze Garanti Paris,” dark brown patina.
Standing on a rectangular black marble plinth. Between 1805 and 1808, Canova created the world-famous sculpture “Paolina Bonaparte as Venus Victrix,” which depicts his sister-in-law Paolina Bonaparte reclining on a bed, scantily clad. The original white marble sculpture stands in the Galleria Borghese in Rome. This is a high-quality recast in heavy bronze, probably from mid-20th century Paris.
